First, I argue that the discourse suffers from a number of theoretical problems – its neglect of the causality running from development to institutions, its inability to see the impossibility of a free market, and its belief that the freest market and the strongest protection of private property rights are best for economic development.   Francis Owusu, Frank L. K. Ohemeng, The Public Sector and Development in Africa: The Case for a Developmental Public Service, Rethinking Development Challenges for Public Policy, /, (), ().

This method of development has been highly successful, especially in China: “No other country has averaged a growth rate more than 9 percent over a year period. Consistently high growth rates are an anomaly limited to a handful of economies in East Asia” (Yusuf and Nabeshima, 35). Their growth prospects range from 4 to 5 percent per year in Latin America to 6 to 7 percent in East Asia to 10 percent in China. These are typically two to three times the expected growth rates of developed countries. 5 Inter-American Development Bank, cited in Business Latin America, The business insights you need to succeed.

Gary Gereffi. Introduction [ ] The highly industrialized countries in East Asia and Latin America have been a fertile spawning ground for a variety of theories and concepts dealing with Third World development. This book provides a critical evaluation of development approaches, both mainstream and alternative.

It considers how theories have been translated into policies, and the practical effects of these policies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

It seeks to isolate those ideas and methods that have worked in practice and continue to show promise in meeting development : John Brohman.

Gary Gereffi and Colin I. Bradford, Jr., provide an overview of national development trajectories. This article examines the politics of development in Latin America and East Asia, focusing on eight countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, South Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand.

It begins by analyzing levels and changes of GDP per capita and income inequality in these countries from toshowing that the capitalist economies of Latin America grew more slowly and had.

It highlights the division between centers and peripheries as a differentiation prior to national varieties, subsequently introducing the concepts of “nuclei of accumulation” and “nuclei of state implication.”.

The book analyses and evaluates the development role and impact of the state in East Asia, in both capitalist (South Korea and Taiwan) and socialist (China) contexts.

What does it mean to speak of 'national development' in the s. As a result of the tumultuous changes in global economic and political structures, scholars and policymakers specializing in the study of national development must reassess the interpretive models they have relied upon in the past.

This book brings together essays by a distinguished group of social scientists. Current projects include: (1) the impact of U.S. protectionism on jobs and regional trade agreements; (2) evaluating how the digital economy and Industry are likely to affect international business strategies and industrial upgrading; and (3) shifting regional interdependencies in East Asia and North America, with a focus on China, South.
